The Hollywood Reporter's annual installment ranking the highest-paid Hollywood actresses is out.
10. Jennifer Lopez - $12 million
While it may just be the bottom, it is the end of a fabulously wealthy top ten, and J-Lo hardly has cause to complain. Especially since the $12 million per film take home is in addition to her musical career.
Beyonce might have leapfrogged her there, but it hasn't happened in Hollywood yet. No one expected Lopez to bounce back after the abysmal Gigli, but the surprise hit Shall We Dance? with Richard Gere has kept her celluloid dreams alive, and kicking.
9. Renee Zellweger - $12 million
She of the ample roundness for her last cinematic outing earns as much as the svelte-as-silicon-can-buy Lopez. But Renee has kept a much higher (larger?) profile over the last season.
Her current film, the sequel Bridget Jones: The Edge Of Reason, is drawing crowds in rather well. Despite the over-the-top performances, it seems to be one of the big hits of the season. As Zellweger continues to drop and regain weight on cue for her roles, she'll probably manage to stay on the right side of the power scale. Whichever it is.
8. Angelina Jolie - $12-15 million
Jolie, rated the sexiest woman alive a couple of times, continues to see her stocks escalate consistently in Hollywood.
The year has been one where she's experimented intensely with her characters. The films, however, have not exactly set the box-office on fire. And two have been very forgettable -- Taking Lives, and Hollywood's much hyped disaster of the year, Alexander.
She was wonderful in the critically praised dud, Sky Captain And The World Of Tomorrow, but seriously, her biggest hit this season did not even show her off: Shark Tale.
7. Sandra Bullock - $12-15 million
The year 2004 saw virtually no releases from Sandra (lets not count the awful festival-circuit film Crash). But in an industry losing more money to pirates every year, it's understandable to value an actress who you still smile at during reruns of Speed over a more talked-about counterpart who keeps making duds. Hence, seventh position.
Sandra has not been seen in anything decent in ages, and her last films to (barely) work were Miss Congeniality and Two Weeks Notice. She should be glad she still made it to top 10.
6. Halle Berry - $14 million
Position six is not where the celebrated Oscar-winning actress would want to be, but it has been a year Hollywood choked on the pitchers of tears Halle usually offers. The awful Catwoman sank at the box-office, and that was Halle's only film in a relatively news-free year.
After Gothika, Berry really needs to be pickier about her roles. Not much chance of that happening in the near future, however, as she's signed on for a remake of the glorious Foxy Brown.
5. Drew Barrymore - $15 million
It's funny how many actresses on the list are those who haven't enjoyed a massive presence at the box-office this year.
Drew will only remember 2004 because she lost her father, John Barrymore. In more cinematic terms, she developed the memory span of a day (remember Bill Murray and Groundhog Day?), and spent her life constantly falling in love with (gasp) Adam Sandler. Can't imagine a worse fate for a woman with a smile as pretty, but 50 First Dates worked.
4. Reese Witherspoon - $15 million
First blonde. Then period. Rinse, repeat. Witherspoon is, despite her Pekinese persistence, a talented, intelligent actress. She makes bankable films, bursts of pure candy floss with no attempts at substance, and then follows them up by edgier, more dramatic, less box-office fare. This keeps her in the producers' good books, and on the all-important cover of Vanity Fair, even as she acts in a period classic of coincidentally the same name. Sharp, Reese, very sharp.
3. Nicole Kidman - $15 million
Calling the leggy Australian beauty the best actress among Hollywood's current leading ladies today is, surprisingly, not an exaggeration. Critics adore her and directors like Lars Von Trier literally go ga-ga over her.
This year saw a couple of films that didn't do well, but The Stepford Wives was a risky remake to venture with, and Birth made it look like a joke in comparison. This quirky actress is definitely among the best ever, and her Oscar ensures her brownie points for the list.
2. Cameron Diaz - $20 million
Her film did make the most money this year, and she didn't even flash us her startlingly innocent grin. Cameron is turning into one of the safest names to grace a marquee with. If she continues her Hollywood climb the way she has for the last few years, she'll surely get to the top of this list next year.
Among other films, her character Princess Fiona in the animated super-success Shrek 2 will return with Shrek 3 in 2006.
1. Julia Roberts - $20 million
Now we come to Hollywood's true superstar. The woman with the dazzling smile has officially been the first to break into a men's only $20 million club, and she certainly deserves it.
The year 2004 has seen the actress discard her usual garb of sunshine and primrose to don darker shades for Mike Nichols' near-nihilistic Closer. Just to not give the box-office an entire miss, though, Julia can also be seen reprising her Tess Ocean character in Steven Soderbergh's sequel, Ocean's Twelve. She'll probably trade places next year with Diaz, as the new mother of twins says she'll take a break.
